Gov. Burgum to Newsmax: Border a 'Constitutional Crisis'

By    |   Saturday, 27 January 2024 01:38 PM EST

North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum told Newsmax on Saturday that the battle between the states and the federal government over whether to secure the southern border has turned into a "constitutional crisis."

"This is a constitutional crisis. As you know, this is a mass invasion," Burgum, a former candidate for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, told "America Right Now."

"This debate," Burgum added, is "about national security, and it's about public safety. And so, of course, we stand with [Texas] Gov. [Greg] Abbott, because the federal government is really abdicating its responsibility."

On Monday, the Supreme Court, in a 5-4 ruling, granted a request by the Biden administration to pause a lower court's ruling that temporarily blocked federal agents from disturbing razor wire while litigation over the issue proceeds.

"Why aren't [the Biden administration] upholding the rule of law around our existing immigration laws?" Burgum asked. "I mean, we know that the Border Patrol knows how to control the border.

"They know how to shut down the border if they're given the authority and they're given the support from the federal government, but they're so demoralized right now because they're not allowed to do their job as law enforcement agents."

Burgum pointed out that the federal government has the ability to shut down the border, although the Biden administration issued a supplemental spending request to Congress tying funding for securing the border to aid for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan.

According to The New York Times, President Joe Biden vowed to shut down the border if Congress passes a bipartisan Senate deal that pairs border enforcement measures with Ukraine aid.

Information from Reuters and The Associated Press was used in this report.
