Robert D'Amico, the former unit chief on the FBI counter drone unit appeared on Newsmax Wednesday to push back on what he says are hysteria and conspiracy theories about the drone sightings that have gripped New Jersey.
"I think there's still a ton of misidentification," D'Amico said on "National Report." I've looked at so many videos and I'm like, that's a manned plane. When I first took over some of the ops of the counter drone unit, I made the same mistakes. I'm looking up there and I'm like, 'hey, that's a drone.' They're like, 'no, sir, that's a plane.'
D'Amico pointed out flying drones is legal and said people are turning to hysteria.
"There are more drones, but some of the things that politicians are saying are somewhat dangerous," D'Amico said.
The federal government is not being transparent enough about the drones and needs to do a better job of explaining to people why they are no threat to public safety, D'Amico said. He also pushed back on reports that some of the drones are the size of cars.
"It is so hard to judge size at night with just lights," D'Amico said. "You can look at a plane and it seems like a totally different size. I've been given video where people swear that this is a large drone, and I look at it and it has all the markings of a manned aircraft. But I am suspect that there's car sized drones flying over New Jersey."
