Russia and the United States are maintaining "diametrically opposed goals" for resolution in the ongoing war in Ukraine, former Virginia Gov. James Gilmore told Newsmax Saturday while commenting on Friday's summit in Alaska between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“They’re in the same positions,” Gilmore told Newsmax's "Wake Up America Weekend." “I’m not surprised that there was not a peace deal yesterday."
He added that he believes Trump "wishes that we would go to a peace deal immediately instead of a ceasefire."
"But my guidance to him this morning, if I were to advise him, would be to buckle up — that this is going to be a challenge going forward, and the war, I think, will continue, at least for a while," Gilmore added.
Russia’s demands include ceding territory, abandoning NATO membership for Ukraine, demilitarizing the country, implementing regime change, and addressing what Moscow calls “root causes," and remain unchanged, he said.
Meanwhile, Gilmore said Ukraine and Trump want a ceasefire but primarily aim to have Russian forces leave Ukrainian territory, stop the war, pay reparations, and return displaced children.
