A House committee's vote to reduce partially redacted copies of six years of former President Donald Trump's tax returns was "shameful," as they were targeting a "private citizen's tax returns," Rep. Jason Smith said Wednesday on Newsmax.
"They're not only just targeting a private citizen, but they are also targeting their political opponent," the Missouri Republican told Newsmax's "Wake Up America."
The House Ways and Means Committee Tuesday voted to release a summary of Trump's tax returns between 2015 and 2021, when he was running for president and serving in the White House, and committee Chairman Richard Neal, D-Mass., said the documents would be released within days after time to redact sensitive material.
But Smith said the vote was made to release his tax returns without them being redacted, and that means the possibility that a "minor child's" Social Security number could be made public, meaning Barron Trump.
"I don't buy it. I don't trust many people in Washington," said Smith, adding that the House Democrats created a new precedent that could mean "open season" on private citizens' tax reports.
"The main point is that the House Democrats, the only thing that strictly unites them is their hatred for Donald Trump and so this is the one last charade that they have two weeks before they lose their power."
That also means, though, a new door for looking over the dealings of President Joe Biden's family business, a matter that many American citizens want to know more about, Smith said.
Meanwhile, Smith spoke out about the pending $1.7 trillion spending bill, calling it "shameful" that spending is in the middle of an "epidemic" in the nation's capital.
"What's even worse is that Republicans in the United States Senate are joining in with this spending," he said. "I wish it would not pass the Senate floor. It's a $2 trillion spending bill over 4,000 pages that was dropped yesterday morning at like 11 a.m. No one can read it. And it is irresponsible. The American public voted loud and clear in November that they wanted our fiscal house to be in order. They wanted to stop this reckless spending."
A continuing resolution, he added, will only happen if the GOP senators will stand up. However, such bills are pushed by lawmakers who are leaving office and trying to get their pet projects pushed through.
"It's unacceptable and it's horrible," Smith said. "It's only going to fuel the inflation fire."
