Anticipation of President-elect Donald Trump reentering the world stage is why a ceasefire and hostage deal was reached in the Israel-Hamas war, retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Darin Gaub told Newsmax Wednesday.
"So I think Trump has proven once again that he's willing to make the statements he needs to. But by the way, we have a president who has a history, this time in a previous administration who can point to that and say, 'If you keep pushing Hamas and you get them and you get them active again and they get violent again and they break this treaty, I don't care where you live, we're going to come find you, because I've done it before,'" Gaub told "American Agenda."
"Treaties to most of the people in the Middle East are — or terrorist groups in the Middle East — are ways to gain time and advantage while they rebuild their strength. I hope ... in this case that's wrong and we can see hostages reunited with their families and the joy on their faces.
"But I think we need to be tempered when it comes to the ability of Hamas to keep something like this treaty for any long term."
