Democrats are prioritizing investigations into Department of Government Efficiency chair Elon Musk over tackling government waste, fraud, and abuse, House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer, R-Ky., told Newsmax on Monday.
"All we're doing is what we said we would do during the campaign," Comer said on "Finnerty." "We're doing what [President] Donald Trump campaigned on and what the American people overwhelmingly voted in favor of, and that's to try to get spending under control."
During a House Oversight Committee hearing last week, Republicans voted down a Democrat motion to subpoena Musk regarding his influence on the U.S. government. After tense exchanges between members, the motion failed on a party-line vote, 20-19.
Comer said the hearing was meant to focus on excessive government spending, and witnesses— including Iowa GOP Gov. Kim Reynolds — were prepared to discuss cost-cutting measures.
"All they wanted to do was talk about Elon Musk," Comer said.
The committee has become a battleground for partisan disputes over DOGE activities. Republicans advocate for cost control, while Democrats push for increased oversight of Musk and his team.
"Every day, we face massive opposition from the Democrat members of Congress and their allies in the liberal media," he said.
"They have no concern about the American taxpayer and where their money goes. They never have. And I think the American people are seeing that in full display right now," he added.
