Comer to Newsmax: GOP Must Work With Trump Fast to Rev Agenda

By    |   Monday, 23 December 2024 10:47 AM EST

It's crucial that House Republicans work with Donald Trump in the first 100 days of his presidency to make sure his agenda gets off to a good start, Rep. James Comer told Newsmax on Monday.

The Kentucky Republican, who is chair of the House Oversight Committee, said on "Wake Up America" that the difficulties in passing last week's government spending bill were "a good lesson for everyone as to how the process is going to be moving forward."

He emphasized that many of "my colleagues in the House, their heart is in the right place, but ... they let the perfect get in the way as to what can actually be accomplished and what can be done."

Comer stressed that "my colleagues are going to have to understand that this is President Trump's agenda. We were all elected the majority solely because of Donald Trump."

The congressman pointed out that "the first 100 days of the administration are the most important," and that "we've got to work with Donald Trump and hopefully, moving forward, my colleagues will do a little bit better job of working with President Trump to make sure we pass his agenda."

Along the same lines, Comer pointed out that he hopes Republicans don't create another prolonged battle over the position of speaker.

"We have a lot of independent-minded Republicans in Congress," he said. "In some ways that is good, but when you get into a situation like we were in last week, it gets difficult."

Comer said that "if we replace Mike Johnson, we need to make sure whoever we choose to replace him has the 218 votes," warning against repeating the mistake of two years ago and be in limbo, thus wasting an entire month of legislation.

The congressman recalled that the public "got really upset at the behavior of House Republicans" for that fiasco.

Speaking of his wishes for the New Year, Comer said that "on day one we are going to get the federal employees back to work" at the office instead of working from home.

He also said he wants to join forces with the newly established Department of Government Efficiency to reduce the size of the federal workforce, because "we have too many repetitive services in the federal government."

Comer added that now with a Republican Department of Justice, the people responsible for the Hunter Biden cover-up can be held accountable.
