Jason Miller, a senior adviser to President-elect Donald Trump, told Newsmax Friday that Republicans are going to have to get tougher to help advance his agenda.
Miller appeared on "Rob Schmitt Tonight" after the House of Representatives approved a spending bill to prevent a government shutdown.
"President Trump was able to go in and reduce some of the pork," Miller said. "But I really wish that those in House leadership had gotten active on this earlier to make sure that we could get that debt ceiling increase taken care of."
As Trump works to get more tax cuts and other items on his agenda passed, Miller said, the House can't have funding fights pop up in the middle of the year and be distractions.
"President Trump did make it better, but we're going to have to get tougher as Republicans," he said.
"We have the White House because of President Trump. We have the Senate because of President Trump. We have the House majority because of President Trump."
"President Trump is the leader of our party. We have to put him in position to make good on the mandate that the American people gave to him," Miller said, adding that Republicans need to be more focused and not make spending fights all about them.
"This is about implementing President Trump's mandate," Miller said.
Miller said Team Trump has confidence House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., can get the president-elect's agenda passed.
"He better get it done, because this is what the American people were promised," Miller said. "They said we're going to secure the border, said that we're going to cut taxes, said we're going to 'drill, baby, drill,' and a lot of other things that we need Congress to work with us on.
"We have to go and deliver, because if we don't, we don't know what the last two years of the president's term might be. We don't know about the four years after that or the eight years after that. We have to get it done."
