Jason Miller to Newsmax: Trump's Brush With Death 'Changes Everything'

By    |   Thursday, 18 July 2024 02:31 PM EDT

Former President Donald Trump had a "real humdinger" of an acceptance speech put together for the Republican National Committee Thursday night, his senior adviser Jason Miller said on Newsmax.

That changed when shots rang out at his rally in rural Pennsylvania last week, hitting him in the ear and killing a hero former fire chief who dived onto his family and took the shot for them.

"That changes everything, that absolutely changes everything, not just in American politics, but for President Trump and his campaign and actually the White House," Miller told "Newsline."

Miller said when Trump's team got together on Monday and Tuesday in Milwaukee, he had notes written out for his new speech, in which he will call for the tone and tenure in American politics to change.

"What you're going to hear is something that's very personal from President Trump," said Miller. "He's going to take us to that moment of the shooting. He's going to walk us through that."

Trump will also be talking about the key issues of what's happening in the United States under President Joe Biden, but "it's going to take a completely different tone because it's saying we can't continue down this same path," Miller added.

The speech is coming less than a week after a 20-year-old shooter climbed atop a roof near where Trump was on stage speaking at a Pennsylvania fairgrounds and opened fire.

"It's a bit surreal for someone who works for the president," said Miller. "I can't even imagine what it's like for the president himself.

"I mean, just a few days after this shooting where he came within a quarter of an inch of being killed, and we're working on a speech, and this is almost like a Bizarro land. But it just shows his dedication to what we're going to do."

He added that it was an important moment for unity when Trump stood up and raised his fist after being shot.

"Normally you have people who go running for the exits or there's a stampede or different things that happen, but everybody stood there, wanted to make sure that President Trump was OK," said Miller. "People have rallied around him … we can't do what the Democrats are doing and saying. We want to go in a different course than go to the what-aboutism where people are suffering in this country."

And whether it's because of the border or the economy, "if we don't take this movement to reorient American politics, which is what President Trump will do, then we could really lose this country," he said.

Meanwhile, as questions swirl about whether President Joe Biden will remain in the race for the White House, Trump's speech will be one that can be given no matter who the eventual Democratic Party nominee is, said Miller.

"This is about his vision," said Miller. "This is about the failures of the current administration, but how we're going to help America, and that's going to be through success. There are a couple of important points rhetorically. As you talk, you use that bully pulpit to bring people together."

And the unity will come, he said, "when we get President Trump in office and bring down the cost of gas and make gas and groceries more affordable. That's what actually will unite the country."
