Sen. Vance to Newsmax: Some in GOP Focused on Ukraine

By    |   Wednesday, 07 February 2024 08:16 PM EST

With the Senate border bill going down in defeat on Wednesday, too many of his Republican colleagues are already looking to "move on to Ukraine," according to Sen. J.D. Vance, R-Ohio. "Those of us that belong to the sanity caucus of the Republican Party need to throw our hands up and say, Let's pump the brakes here," he said.

Appearing on Newsmax to discuss the potential political fallout, Vance said, "Republicans were always going to lose on the negotiations. You sort of went in saying, Well, Republicans want border security, Democrats want Ukraine. Can we have meeting of the minds? What actually happened was the border security package was negotiated in secret."

Earlier Wednesday, Senate Republicans defeated a bipartisan $118 billion border security package by a vote of 49-50.

"We didn't even read the text until three days ago. How can you say a 370-page bill is going to secure the border when you don't even have time to read it?" he said on "Rob Schmitt Tonight."

Since 2021 there have been more than 7.3 million illegal entries through the U.S. southern border.

"I'm glad that we were able to defeat it, Rob, but unfortunately the fight continues because we actually do need to solve the border and we have a president who is totally uninterested in doing so," Vance said.

Blame for the porous U.S. border falls squarely on Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, say Republicans, who tried and failed to impeach him on Tuesday. Vance was disappointed in his House colleagues who didn't go along with the Republican-led efforts saying, "It's not how to be a good teammate with the fight that's so important for the American people."
