Rep. Jeff Van Drew told Newsmax he's betting on Rep. Mike Johnson, R-La., to become the next House speaker when Wednesday's vote is tallied.
"We had about a 15-hour day yesterday, starting in the morning and until well into the evening, but there was a difference," the New Jersey Republican told Newsmax's "National Report" before the vote was to take place, adding that it's clear Johnson is the person for the job.
"He's somebody that has strong conservative values, is extremely well spoken, and yet at the same time is very humble and likes to work with everybody, and that's a little bit different," Van Drew continued. "It really matters when you are approaching other members."
Further, he said Johnson has "built up a lot of good relationships," and at the same time "really represents" the GOP caucus.
Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump has spoken out in favor of Johnson, and Van Drew said his opinion of the potential speaker matters, as "he will be the presidential nominee."
He noted, though, that Trump was "careful in his words."
"He certainly supports Mike Johnson and believes we should go forward with him, but all the candidates that were up there were very qualified," said Van Drew. "They were good people. They could have done the job as well."
