Speaker Johnson to Newsmax: Biden Must Be Tough With Xi During Meet

By    |   Monday, 13 November 2023 07:31 PM EST

When he meets Chinese President Xi Jinping in San Francisco on Wednesday, President Joe Biden needs to project strength and not the weakness that has defined his foreign policy decisions, House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., told Newsmax on Monday.

"I don't think the president takes this seriously enough," Johnson told "The Record With Greta Van Susteren" regarding China's aim to be a global superpower. "In so many ways, they basically have an appeasement strategy to many of our adversaries, and I think they do this with China, as well.

"I don't think so much of the aggression that's being pushed around the globe right now would be happening if President [Donald] Trump was still in the Oval Office."

Johnson said Biden and his administration project weakness across the world stage.

"Ronald Reagan always taught peace through strength, right?" Johnson said. "And weakness invites aggression, and I think that's why we see it. And in that aggression mode, we have our eyes fixed on Russia and, of course, what's happening with Iran and with Israel and terrorism and all these other tyrants around the world. But China is still looming there, and they're doing it methodically, deliberately, and buying up farmland in the U.S. and areas around military bases, and the Biden has allowed the Chinese spy balloon to float unimpeded over the country for eight days.

"We really need to take a harder stand."
