RNC Chair to Newsmax: Americans of Both Parties Support Voter ID

By    |   Tuesday, 17 March 2026 10:23 AM EDT

Republican National Committee Chair Joe Gruters said Tuesday that when it comes to a voter ID requirement, "Americans support it no matter what party you're with."

He added there is broad bipartisan backing for election integrity reforms.

Appearing on Newsmax's "Wake Up America," Gruters called voter ID and proof-of-citizenship measures "commonsense legislation that everybody supports," citing polling showing "83% of Americans are for these commonsense things that basically protects democracy."

Gruters urged immediate action in the Senate on the SAVE America Act, saying, "This is the time to pass commonsense, reasonable legislation that will bring about fair and free elections that are safe and secure," and encouraged voters to pressure lawmakers.

He expressed frustration with Republican holdouts, warning, "Republicans are waffling. They deserve to be called out," while also criticizing Democrats as "overwhelmingly against it."

On opposition to voter ID, Gruters said there was a political motive. He said that "there's one reason: they're trying to cheat," and claimed Democrats "don't want anybody to look at" voter rolls while pursuing policies that would "flood our country with illegal immigrants" and "pave the pathway to allow them to vote."

He framed GOP election efforts as balancing access and security. He said, "Our entire thing is to make it as easy as possible to vote, but as hard as possible to cheat."

Addressing redistricting, Gruters argued Republicans are seeking to "even out these scales" after what he described as decades of Democrat gerrymandering, adding, "Republicans need to wake up. We need to make sure that we ensure fair districts across this country."

Gruters also called for stronger party unity in Congress, saying Democrats "do a much better job of holding ranks," and warning Republicans they "have to do the right thing" to counter what he described as Democratic efforts to "hold on to power."

He concluded by emphasizing the stakes of the legislation, saying, "We must ensure that these elections are fair and free and that they're secure and safe."
