President Donald Trump is "trying to start a dialogue, a serious discussion about what life post-Gaza is going to look like," said Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, told Newsmax on Wednesday.
Trump on Tuesday suggested during a White House news conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the U.S. take "ownership" in redeveloping the war-torn territory into "the Riviera of the Middle East."
Efforts to revitalize Gaza will "require other countries like Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt and others to step up," including the UAE and "a number of Gulf states," Cornyn said on "Newsline."
Cornyn also discussed reconciliation bills, telling Newsmax that "we're going to see a multi-trillion dollar tax increase on 62% of American taxpayers" unless Congress acts.
"So we have to act," he said. "And it's also, I think, a historic, a generational opportunity for us to begin to deal with our unsustainable debt, where we've got about $37 trillion in debt. It's now begun to jeopardize our national security because we're paying more on interest on the national debt than we are on defense.
"But to me the real question is what's it going to take for Speaker [Mike] Johnson to get 218 votes in the House? I believe that with 53 Republicans in the Senate, we can pass anything that the House passes. But they are struggling, I think, right now to get to a consensus. But I'm confident they will get there."
