Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, told Newsmax on Thursday that the border measures proposed by Democrats in the aid package Senate Republicans blocked this week were, in the absence of policy changes, “simply throwing money” at the problem.
Ernst, responding to President Joe Biden’s plea for support for the proposal, said on “Wake Up America” that “Democrats did bring forward a package that was proposed by President Biden and that package included funding for Ukraine, funding for Israel, for the Indo-Pacific, and the border.”
The senator added: “Unfortunately what President Biden is doing is just simply throwing money at the border, which, while we appreciate that he wants to spend more money there, it doesn't have the necessary policy changes to address the migrant flow that has come to our southern border.”
According to Ernst, the proposal “doesn't address the open parole system that this administration has and allowing all of these illegals into the country. So we have to be very hard about this. We have to force the administration to step up.”
She noted that Biden recently said, "We need to change the system. That’s what we are proposing with these policy changes, so until we see real progress with the policy, we will continue holding off on this package. We are united as a front, as Republicans in the United States Senate and our constituents are behind us.”
