Lara Trump, daughter-in-law of former President Donald Trump, told Newsmax on Wednesday House Republicans were correct to make clear to Hunter Biden that if he didn’t show up for a closed-door deposition on Dec. 13, he would be hit with contempt of Congress.
Hunter Biden is the central figure in House Republicans’ investigation of alleged corruption involving his father, President Joe Biden, and other members of his family. Hunter Biden's lawyer Abbe Lowell had sought a condition for Biden to testify only in public in front of the House Oversight and Judiciary committees, chaired by Reps. James Comer, R-Ky., and Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, respectively.
But Comer and Jordan wrote to Lowell Wednesday the subpoena issued to his client on Nov. 8 compels him to testify behind closed doors and if he doesn’t appear for his deposition on Dec. 13, “the committees will initiate contempt of Congress proceedings.”
“I completely agree with this decision should he decide not to follow the due process here,” Trump, who is married to the former president’s son, Eric Trump, told “Newsline.” “Hunter Biden should receive no special treatment. He is a citizen of this country, and he should be treated as such. And this is the process. This is what should happen.”
Donald Trump Jr. and his sister Ivanka Trump gave testimony behind closed doors to Democrat-controlled congressional committees without making any special demands.
“Whenever anyone in my family has been subpoenaed by the House, by the Senate, everyone complied and did what was required, including my brother-in-law, including my sister-in-law, so this should be no different,” Lara Trump said. “Hunter Biden does not get to choose to do a public hearing so that it is an abbreviated version of events.”
