Col. Mark Cancian to Newsmax: Trump Didn't Mention Firing, Loyalty Tests

By    |   Tuesday, 30 September 2025 12:41 PM EDT

President Donald Trump assured military leaders in Quantico, Virginia, on Tuesday that he would continuously support them, promising to bolster U.S. forces and deter nuclear threats.

Retired Col. Mark Cancian told Newsmax that the most important aspect of Trump's speech was that "we did not hear anything about firing generals."

"I think the most important thing was what we did not hear. In other words, we did not hear anything about firing generals. We did not hear anything about loyalty tests. We did not hear anything that would cause the generals and admirals to be concerned about their oath of office."

"And there had been tremendous speculation about that before the meeting. We didn't hear any of that," Cancian said during an appearance on "National Report."

Cancian noted that Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and Trump had the same positive, unifying message to the generals in the audience. "We did hear the president talk about a strong America. He did reinforce the themes that Hegseth had put out earlier about fitness and about warrior spirit."

"And then we had a lot of political rally. They had clearly been told not to applaud during the speech itself, and there was no standing ovation. It was all very polite, and I think relatively positive and certainly a relief compared to what some expectations had been," he added.
