Blackburn to Newsmax: Independents Coming Back to Trump

By    |   Monday, 22 January 2024 07:25 PM EST

Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., told Newsmax on Monday that Americans, and especially independent voters, are coming back to former President Donald Trump and getting behind his candidacy because they remember how different life was during his administration.

"Independent voters in all of the polling are coming back to him because they recall what life was like under a Trump presidency," Blackburn said during an appearance on Newsmax's "The Chris Salcedo Show." "They know that they had more money in their pocket. They know the border was more secure. There was not the crime in the streets. You weren't seeing our enemies flare up against us. Our allies knew they were an ally and our enemies knew they better fear us. And that is what the American people, and certainly Tennesseeans, are wanting to see."

Blackburn said that primary polling across the country is reflective of many voters embracing Trump as the presumptive GOP nominee and pointed to the Iowa caucuses – which Trump won last week in a landslide – as a sign of things to come in New Hampshire.

"You saw the results from Iowa," she said. "In New Hampshire, President Trump is going to have a historic win, and we're expecting that. So, I think it is time for us to unite behind President Trump. He is going to be our nominee. I was an early endorser of President Trump; I've been so pleased to see so many of my Senate colleagues come along and endorse President Trump. He is going to be the nominee."

New Hampshire's primary is slated for Tuesday and Trump has a 10-point lead on his lone challenger, former United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley, in the Granite State, according to the results of a new Daily Mail poll.

When asked what her message was to colleagues that are inclined to legislate against the interests of their own constituents, Blackburn said it "is important that we look at what our party stands for."

"We stand for individual freedom," she said. "A strong free enterprise system. We stand for the rule of law, and people are tired of two tiers of justice. We stand for a strong America and respecting our sovereignty. That's where people are wanting to see action, and they know that President Trump delivered on those. He delivered for them. That is why they're saying in record numbers, so let's put him back in the White House and give him four more years."
