Schlapp to Newsmax: Midterm Elections Focus Is 'on the Senate'

By    |   Wednesday, 04 February 2026 05:48 PM EST

CPAC Chair and conservative commentator Matt Schlapp told Newsmax on Wednesday he is watching Senate races the closest as the midterm elections draw near.

Schlapp told "The Record With Greta Van Susteren" that, "I'm really focused on the Senate."

Schlapp said the most recent information he has heard is what has him looking closely at the status of races in the upper chamber.

"I got a full briefing on what's going on in the Senate races," he said, "and I think Republicans are a little worried. They've got some open seats that they are defending. And, you know, it looks like it could be tight."

Schlapp said he is most interested in what develops in North Carolina with a crowded primary and is predicting the winner. "The one that I think I'm looking at the most, I think the harbinger of everything is North Carolina, where my friend Michael Whatley will be the Republican nominee, former RNC chairman, former chairman of the Republican Party in North Carolina, a fellow Notre Damer."

The CPAC chair said Whatley is facing a tough campaign. "A great guy. But he's in a tough race because Trump won North Carolina twice, but by a small margin the second time, 1.3% or so," Schlapp said.

Schlapp also said some elections could be swayed by the fallout of the Jeffrey Epstein saga. "We should be indicted as a party if we can't make it stick to the Democrats because Epstein gave all his money to Democrats and hosted all these Democrats," he explained. "And so, this should be an easy thing for us. We'll see how that goes."

Schlapp said political labels are tougher to assign in some ways going into the midterms. "Today, Bill Clinton would be a moderate," he said. Others are more out in the open as part of "a very woke, radical Democrat National Party."
