Americans should "get the best pricing" for pharmaceuticals, Dr. Mehmet Oz, administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, told Newsmax on Thursday, after President Donald Trump unveiled several new initiatives to lower drug costs. The measures include launching a "TrumpRx" direct-to-consumer website offering discounted medicines and reaching an agreement with Pfizer to cut the price of many of its products.
"It's called Most Favored Nation," Oz said during an appearance on Newsmax's "National Report." "So you get the same prices as anywhere else on the planet.
"We're not asking for better, but we're saying if we're funding all the research, which more than half is coming from U.S. coffers, if we're spending a lot of effort trying to make sure that our Americans are healthy, we should be able to get the best pricing, certainly equal pricing, than anybody else."
Oz noted that lowering the cost of drugs for Americans has been a top priority for Trump for decades. "The president had been frustrated by this for years. He tried to address it in [his] first administration, and he has called me continuously and [Health and Human Services] Secretary [Robert F.] Kennedy [Jr.] to make sure that we had this high on our agenda of items to address.
"It took some negotiating. We had some tools we could apply pressure with, and we were able to get Pfizer, who is a leading pharmaceutical company, and their CEO, to come to the Oval Office and make the commitment to do what I think all pharmaceutical companies will do, which is to allow our nation to buy medications for our people at the same price as other countries," he added.
