RNC's Whatley to Newsmax: Midterms Key to Trump's Term

By    |   Monday, 03 February 2025 08:40 PM EST

Republican National Committee Chair Michael Whatley told Newsmax on Monday that preserving President Donald Trump's ability to see through his agenda means keeping Republican control of Congress in the 2026 midterms.

That job, Whatley said, began the day after the inauguration.

"[T]he midterms started on Jan. 21," Whatley said on "The Record With Greta Van Susteren." "You know, very excited to have President Trump in the White House. And the question that we're facing right now is whether he's going to have a two-year term or a four-year term."

By that, Whatley pointed to the 2018 midterms when Democrats took back the House by a wide margin, stymieing Trump's ability to govern his last two years in office. Republicans had control of Congress in 2016 — just as they do now.

"Well, I think that what we saw in 2018 elections went for the Democrats. So we're going to ... work every single day to make sure. We're gonna go back to fundamentals, just like we did," Whatley said. "We're going to make sure that we get out the vote, protect the ballot, and we're going to ensure that there's a Republican Congress for him to work with for all four years."
