Senate Candidate Whatley to Newsmax: Will Fight for N.C. as Trump 'Ally'

By    |   Tuesday, 17 February 2026 02:26 PM EST

Republican Senate candidate Michael Whatley said on Newsmax Tuesday that he will back "economic policies that are going to create jobs" and serve as "an ally for President Donald Trump in the Senate."

He made the declarations as he campaigned in North Carolina against potential Democrat opponent Roy Cooper.

"I'm going to fight every day for every family, for every community across North Carolina, and we're going to fight for economic policies that are going to create jobs, that are going to allow people to take home bigger paychecks, that are going to bring down costs," Whatley said Tuesday on "Bianca Across the Nation."

Whatley, a Trump-endorsed candidate and former Republican National Committee chair, said he plans to focus on public safety and family opportunity if elected.

"We're going to keep our kids and our community safe, and we're going to make sure that every person in North Carolina has an opportunity to get an education, get married, buy a house, and raise a family," he said. "That's all anybody wants."

Asked about the SAVE America Act, Whatley said voter ID and proof-of-citizenship requirements have broad support and pressed the Senate to move the measure.

"Over 80% of the American people support voter ID, and a similar majority support the fact that only American citizens can vote in federal elections," he said.

"This bill has absolutely huge bipartisan support," Whatley added. "Democrats, Republicans, and independents alike all support this bill.

"The Senate needs to get it done."

Whatley also highlighted disaster relief efforts in western North Carolina after Hurricane Helene, saying the Trump administration stepped up following the storm.

"When President Trump was sworn in, what we had seen over the course of the previous couple of months after Hurricane Helene hit was excuses," Whatley said.

"And we saw absolutely no action in the western part of North Carolina. Since President Trump was sworn in, over $8.5 billion in federal relief has been poured into western North Carolina by the Trump administration," said Whatley.

He added that he is "very excited about seeing that the roads are being rebuilt, bridges are being rebuilt, and water systems are being rebuilt. The Blue Ridge Parkway is up and running."

"The president has made it very clear he will not forget western North Carolina," said Whatley.

Meanwhile, Whatley said he has been assigned to a federal panel reviewing the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

"I'm very honored that he has put me on the FEMA Review Council to make sure that we never have a response … that we saw from the Biden administration and my opponent, Roy Cooper," he said.

"Again, we have to do better in getting relief to the people of … not just North Carolina, but across the country."
