Rep. Michael Cloud, R-Texas, told Newsmax on Friday that Microsoft's recent disavowal of the media and information website rating system NewsGuard is "a good start" for the company, which he claims was part of a "censorship regime" under the previous administration.
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, last month sent a letter to Microsoft questioning the company's promotion and funding of NewsGuard's "Media Literacy" program, which the senator claims is biased.
Microsoft said in response that its association with NewsGuard was only a one-time payment to the organization in 2018 and noted that they have asked NewsGuard to remove a notice from its website that read: "NewsGuard's Media Literacy Programs are made possible thanks to generous support from Microsoft."
Cloud said on "Wake Up America" that Microsoft's statement on NewsGuard is "a good start," adding, "We all know the censorship regime that the Biden administration had stood up working with private companies as well, to force feed this upon the American people, to censor voices of dissent and the like."
He added, "It's a good start, but there's still a lot more work to be done. I know Microsoft still is … trying to promote that kind of ideology globally. So we'd like to see a little more action there as well, but this certainly is a good first start in the right direction."
Cloud also remarked on his bill to codify Trump's executive orders against diversity, equity, and inclusion programs and prevent future administrations from implementing similar initiatives, saying, "If you want to interact or do business with the federal government, this kind of stuff cannot continue."
