Rep. Mike Carey, R-Ohio, touted his credentials to Newsmax on Tuesday for taking the Senate seat of JD Vance, who will become vice president in January.
Carey said he knows how to get things done in Congress and is a strong ally of President-elect Donald Trump.
"[Ohio Gov.] Mike DeWine has said, 'You've got to have someone who can win a primary, win a general, and then have to do it all over again,' so if you look at just what I have done over the past three years in winning my seat, it has been pretty impressive," Carey told "Wake Up America."
Carey also noted that he has "only been in office for three years, so I'm not a career politician," but pointed out that he proved his worth earlier this month when he won a difficult district by 13 percentage points.
Carey also said he has had the endorsement of Trump this time.
"You look at my relationship with Trump, my relationship with DeWine, [I] am in a really good position [and] it would be an honor to represent the people of Ohio. I was born and raised here and know every bit of the state," Carey said.
Carey acknowledged that getting Trump's agenda through Congress will not be easy.
"We are going to have tight numbers in the House, there is no doubt about that, but what we hope to accomplish in the first 100 days, we can accomplish with the numbers we will have," Carey said.
Carey said the slim numbers are even more reason that he should replace Vance, because in Congress "we need to increase our steps to back Trump" and "focus on the initiatives he outlined in the election."
Carey said that Trump has a big agenda and that there is much work to do together, but he emphasized that is even more the reason "we have got to have a House and a Senate to do it effectively, and this is why I think I am the right one to go to the Senate on day one and get things done."
