Rep. Mike Flood, R-Neb., told Newsmax on Wednesday that Republicans say Alejandro Mayorkas has done a poor job as secretary of Homeland Security. They are just at odds about what to about it.
The House GOP on Tuesday suffered defeat as four Republicans joined Democrats in voting 216-214 against impeaching Mayorkas. One Republican who voted against, Rep. Blake Moore of Utah, did so as a procedural measure to allow Republicans to bring up the vote again, likely next week.
The other Republicans — Ken Buck of Colorado, Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin, and Tom McClintock of California — reportedly said impeachment was not the right course of action.
"Everybody does agree" that Mayorkas has done a bad job, Flood told "The Chris Salcedo Show." "The question is, What do we do about it? I think that impeaching him is the right route."
Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., is expected to return to the Capitol next week after missing Tuesday's vote while undergoing treatment for blood cancer in Louisiana. Scalise has indicated he's in favor of impeaching Mayorkas; and that could get House Republicans, who have a narrow 219-212 majority, across the finish line.
"When you've got such a slim majority ... hopefully we'll have Leader Scalise back next week," Flood said. "This should go forward. [Impeachment] does send a message to the country that we are holding the executive branch accountable.
"Listen [Mayorkas] has been lying to us for a long time about our border being secure. We know it's not secure. Joe Biden knows it's not secure. And if they wanted to do something about it, they could get it done by sundown on any given day by just enforcing the laws that we have and using executive orders.
"Unfortunately, we find ourselves in a situation where we have to take out the trash for the executive branch."
