It's "not fair" to blame Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel for the "real problems" in getting Republicans elected in recent years, but it may be time to consider term limits for the job, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said.
"I personally like her, and I think she's done a lot of good things," Huckabee said Thursday on Newsmax's "Wake Up America" about McDaniel, who has chaired the RNC for seven years. "She's very articulate, but I'm also a person who believes in term limits for everybody. It doesn't matter whether you're a governor or president. … I think it's probably healthy for a party to change its leadership from time to time."
At the same time, it's ultimately "candidates who win or lose elections, not party officials," but the RNC's fundraising is "in a pretty rough place right now," said Huckabee. "It's probably more problematic for her than anything going on with elections because you can't win elections if you don't have the dough."
The RNC is holding its winter meeting in Las Vegas this week, with the gathering coming after a proposal to declare former President Donald Trump the presumptive 2024 presidential nominee was pulled back after Trump rejected the idea.
Huckabee said Trump made the right call.
"It's somewhat revealing that Donald Trump said, 'No, I don't want to be considered the presumptive nominee,'" Huckabee said. "I think that's sort of his spirit. He wants to fight it out."
Huckabee also agreed that former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, the last remaining major challenger to Trump, has every right to stay in the race.
"This needs to play out," Huckabee said. "I'm a Trump supporter. I think he is our nominee. I think he's our next president, but Nikki has every right to run, and I think Nikki is the only person who has a right to tell herself it's time to go."
