Rep. Mike Kelly, R-Pa., told Newsmax on Friday that the final hearing of the House task force investigation into the assassination attempts against President-elect Donald Trump "got off center" due to the high emotions the incidents have brought out.
Rep. Pat Fallon, R-Texas, and Acting Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe engaged in a heated exchange on Thursday over Secret Service procedures at the memorial for 9/11 in New York City on the anniversary of the attacks this year.
Kelly, who sits on the panel, said on "American Agenda" that the hearing "got off center," adding that Fallon "is a very emotional person" and noting he "didn't understand the blend" of the issues since Rowe "was not the director of the Secret Service at the time" of the incident about which he was being asked.
The congressman said that "the whole purpose of the task force was about what happened on July 13th this past summer," referring to the assassination attempt at the Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
The Pennsylvania Republican said that the panel did a "real deep dive" to focus on discovering "what went wrong that day," "what should have been done" differently, and "what can we do to ensure that, to the best of our ability, it doesn't happen again?"
Kelly said the Secret Service "failed on July 13th," and said the panel will "finish this report, but then we'll also put in recommendations" for the agency and for congressional oversight.
