Pressure isn't only on newly reelected House Speaker Mike Johnson, but all House Republicans to "do the work of the American people" by fulfilling the promises made to the American people, Rep. Mike Lawler told Newsmax Sunday.
"They gave us a House Republican majority, a Senate Republican majority, and the White House with President [Donald] Trump to deliver on our promises," the New York Republican said on Newsmax's "Sunday Report." "The only way we're going to do that is if we're working together as one team."
There is a great deal of work ahead, Lawler said, including reining in the size and scope of the government and extending tax cuts. This would include lifting the cap on the state and local tax (SALT) deduction, which he said is a "top priority" for him.
"We need to secure the border, get our economy jump-started, and address the international crises around the globe," he added. "President Trump will be sworn in on the 20th and we have got to hit the ground running."
This means it was critically important to quickly elect Johnson, said Lawler.
"We had a big conference yesterday in Washington, where we went through a lot of the issues, including reconciliation," he added. "We're already in the process of getting to work and hitting the ground running."
Meanwhile, Lawler also spoke out about reports that the White House staff covered up for outgoing President Joe Biden and his decline, accusing Democrats of continuing to "gaslight" the country.
"People know exactly what they saw in that debate, what they saw over these four years," he said. "We're not to the bottom of this. I think there needs to be a full and thorough investigation as to who was actually in charge of the White House at key moments and who was making decisions with respect to our national security if Joe Biden was as incapacitated at times as the reporting suggests."
He added that he has spoken with Democrat colleagues who were also surprised by "the severity of his mental decline."
"This is not a White House in which rank and file members were having that much interaction with the president as compared to prior administrations," said Lawler. "I think clearly his staff and senior Democrats from [Nancy] Pelosi to Chuck Schumer, did everything they could to hide the truth from the American people. And ultimately it bit them in the butt."
But even putting Biden's issues aside, the world is in the "most precarious place since World War II" because of foreign policies under him and Vice President Kamala Harris, said Lawler.
"Our homeland is less secure today because of their disastrous border policies," he said, while commenting on last week's attack in New Orleans.
"We need to secure our border, and we need to root out the radical elements that may be in this country," said Lawler.
