The fact that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg even brought charges against Daniel Penny illustrates how he has been a failure and should be removed from his position immediately, Rep. Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., told Newsmax on Tuesday.
Lawler told "Newsline" that "very clearly Alvin Bragg should be removed as the district attorney," pointing out that New York Gov. Kathy Hochul "has that power, and she should remove him immediately."
Penny, a former U.S. Marine sergeant who used a chokehold to restrain Jordan Neely, a homeless man who was loud, angry, and threatening as he boarded a New York City subway car, was found not guilty of criminally negligent homicide on Monday in Neely's death.
Prosecutors said Penny acted recklessly and negligently by restraining Neely in a chokehold for so long, even after Neely stopped moving.
The congressman stated that Bragg is "the worst attorney general in the United States [and] has allowed lawlessness to win the day in New York City."
But "what is clear, more than anything else, is that Alvin Bragg has allowed politics to be pervasive in his decision making as opposed to upholding the rule of law, and Kathy Hochul has a responsibility under the New York State Constitution to remove him as district attorney effective immediately," Lawler said.
Lawler, who serves on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, also discussed on "Newsline" the overthrow of the Assad regime in Syria.
The congressman said that "Donald Trump has a lot of work ahead of him when he becomes president of the United States … to get foreign policy back on track, to have a foreign policy that is centered around peace through strength but brings these conflicts to an end."
Lawler insisted that "Americans cannot foot the bill for every conflict around the globe," although he did concede at the same time that the situation is complicated because "we obviously also cannot shirk in our responsibility as leader of the free world."
