Rep. Pat Fallon, R-Texas, told Newsmax that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., is spreading lies over the ongoing government shutdown.
Fallon told Newsline on Thursday, "I'm going to try and be respectful here. But Chuck Schumer just got, you know, those lead-ins where he's just absolutely lying."
Fallon said, "You know, we voted to keep the government open. So, let's put this in context."
The Texas Republican said Americans need to understand the reality of what is happening with the spending showdown in Washington. "The clean CR, continuing resolution," he said, "simply means we're keeping, ironically, funding levels at Biden-era levels."
"And 99% of Republicans voted for it," Fallon said, "and about 95-99% of Democrats voted against it. Now, why? At the end of the day, it's because he's worried about losing a Democratic primary in New York against AOC (Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y.)."
Fallon said, "In our entire history, we have never shut the government down on a clean CR. And in fact, when the Republicans were in the minority in the House, Senate and White House, we've never shut the government down for any reason."
"And this is what the Democrats are doing," he said, "because this is a legislative coup, because I guess according to them, elections don't have consequences."
Congress remains deadlocked in Washington as the federal government enters its third week of the shutdown, with no clear resolution in sight.
Senate Republicans most recently offered a stopgap bill to reopen the government, but it failed its 10th vote in the upper chamber, securing only 51 votes, falling short of the 60 needed for cloture.
Democrats are holding firm, insisting that any reopening must include solid commitments to extend Affordable Care Act subsidies and prevent sharp premium hikes.
Republican leaders attempted to sidestep the stalemate by pressing a standalone defense funding bill, but Senate Democrats blocked that effort by rejecting an $852 billion plan that would have funded the Pentagon through September.
With House Republicans out of session and Senate votes repeatedly failing, the standoff looks likely to drag on, raising economic risks and drawing mounting public frustration.
Rep. Fallon said only a handful of moderate Democratic senators are needed to end the spending showdown and hopes they will help reopen the government.
