Rep. Zach Nunn, R-Iowa, told Newsmax on Wednesday that combat veterans in Congress are ready to support President-elect Donald Trump's nominee to head the Pentagon, Pete Hegseth.
Hegseth this week is continuing to meet with members of Congress in an attempt to shore up support for his nomination, which has come under fire due to allegations of sexual assault made against him in 2017, as well as accusations that he drank while on the job at Fox News during his time as a presenter.
In an interview with "Newsline," Nunn hailed Hegseth for his military service and noted, "I want someone who's going to lead the largest military operation in the world, the secretary of defense, to be someone who is a tested leader who's done this."
Nunn said that Hegseth has "been on the ground like so many of us in the military. We have served combat tours back to back around the world. We want to end the forever wars, and we want to get back to a military that is truly focused on security, not a DEI agenda."
The congressman said that these issues have brought himself and "many other of the combat veterans … to support Pete's nomination" and to "support President Trump in this."
He added, "The only feedback I've had is, I've got five daughters, and I want them to get to kick [expletive] like every other American who decides to join up and serve in our national military."
