Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Texas, praised the American people for their role in shaping the nation's future and emphasized the Republican Party's duty to deliver on its promises.
Sessions made the plea on Newsmax, Saturday, as the 119th Congress prepares to convene.
Rep. Sessions appeared on "Saturday Agenda" to discuss the Republican Party's priorities following their electoral victories. With Republicans poised to take control of the Senate for the first time in four years, Sessions stressed the importance of unity and effective governance.
"Let us get this right, and that is: Americans saved America," Sessions said. "Now Republicans have an obligation, a duty, and an obligation to make sure we deliver. I expect us to do it."
The first major task for the incoming Congress is electing a House speaker. When asked if current speaker, Mike Johnson, would retain the gavel, Sessions expressed confidence in Johnson's leadership.
"That will be at least beginning with our speaker, Mike Johnson. Mike Johnson is our speaker now," he said. "It does us no good to go into this kind of fight at the time we're trying to elect a speaker and determine that we will be in the majority is just too darn close."
Sessions emphasized the need for unity within the party, particularly with high stakes.
"I'm very excited to know that we are going to come back. We are going to be in charge. We will have the United States Senate. We'll have the greatest president, Donald Trump."
Looking ahead to potential leadership challenges, Sessions was asked about the possibility of Rep. Tom Massie, R-Ky., as potentially against Johnson's election.
"Well, I think that I know Tom Massie. Tom Massie is really a good man. He's a team player," Sessions said. "He would also be smart enough to recognize that the successful rain dance has a lot to do with timing, and that is very simply, that's the day we'll do it."
Sessions stressed that any internal party conflicts should be postponed until after the 2024 presidential election when Republicans aim to solidify their legislative and executive agendas.
"It is relatively simple to get rid of someone when it's down to literally an even number, but it is hard to evidently work together," Sessions noted. "And that is what I think the American people want, and I think Donald Trump would want that also.
"We need to work together. We need to then, if we're going to have a fight, let's worry about it after Donald Trump becomes president, not before."
