Former Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., told Newsmax on Thursday people are starting to realize Judeo-Christian values are needed for a healthy society.
Santorum appeared on "Bianca Across the Nation," after President Donald Trump announced a day of prayer on the National Mall this year to celebrate America's 250th anniversary.
The event on May 17 will "rededicate America as one nation under God," Trump said.
"Even some on the left are beginning to understand that a country that is not guided by Judeo-Christian values is not a country they want to live in," Santorum said.
Santorum quoted author Richard Dawkins, an avowed atheist, who said, "I don't like Christians, but I want to live in a world governed by Christianity, which is hard to do if there are no Christians."
"That's what the left is sort of come to," Santorum said. "They understand the brutality of a society that doesn't have moral laws governed by Judeo-Christian biblical ethics.
"It's a brutal society and one that does not respect the dignity of anybody," Santorum added. It's an incongruous position that they take.
"But Dawkins, I think said it best, which is, 'I don't like Christians. I don't like prayer, I don't like any of these things, but I like, I like, I like the moral code by which these people live by,'" Santorum continued. "You can't have one without the other."
The planned event in May is being promoted as part of the White House's "America Prays" initiative tied to the "America 250" commemoration of the nation's founding, inviting faith communities to unite in prayer ahead of 2026's semiquincentennial.
