Sen. Rick Scott to Newsmax: 'We Have Lawless Federal Government'

By    |   Tuesday, 23 January 2024 08:23 PM EST

Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., told Newsmax on Tuesday he is concerned about what he perceives as a lawless federal government's disregard for border security.

Responding to a question about states' rights, Scott told "The Chris Salcedo Show": "We have a lawless federal government. We have a federal government that has decided to open our borders. We have a federal government that has said they're OK with drugs coming across our borders, criminals coming across the border, terrorists coming across the border, millions of people coming across the border, completely unvetted."

Scott commended Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott for taking action to preserve the safety of his citizens, and criticized the Biden administration and the Supreme Court for their stance on the issue. Scott said he is disappointed the Biden administration doesn't prioritize border security, emphasizing the importance of states having the autonomy to defend their borders.

"Remember that the United States was not a federal republic," he said. "We are the United States; we have states' rights, and so Greg Abbott should have the opportunity to defend his border with Mexico."

Scott questioned the likelihood of securing a favorable border bill with the Biden administration. He noted the administration's indifference to border concerns and raised doubts about the effectiveness of any negotiated package with lawmakers.

"Look, the Biden administration acknowledged they don't care about the border," he said. "So, here's what we're doing up here right now. We're negotiating a border package with the Biden administration. You think when they're sitting there going [to] the Supreme Court saying they don't want to have that razor wire up that we're going to get a good deal? So what is your chance [that] we're gonna get a good deal out of it?"

Scott said he hopes that any legislation passed would prioritize tying Biden's hands on Ukraine aid with ensuring border security. But he said he doesn't think it will.

"I hope if something passes here, which I hope it doesn't, based on what I know so far, if it's not going to tie Biden's hands on Ukraine aid to give real border security, I don't know why we're doing what we're doing," he said.
