According to Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., on Newsmax, there are only two ways to get a secure border under the current political climate. Wait for Donald Trump to be reelected in 2024 or connect Ukraine aid to any future border bill under President Joe Biden.
"We've got to do something that [Senate Minority Leader] Mitch McConnell wouldn't do, but we all wanted. We have to say if Biden wants Ukraine aid, if he's going to get Ukraine aid, it's going to be tied to the numbers that come across the border," Scott said on "American Agenda" on Wednesday.
Earlier Wednesday, Senate Republicans defeated a bipartisan $118 billion package by a vote of 49-50. Scott claimed the bill was not a border security bill, but merely an "immigration bill."
"I don't get it," he said. "I don't know why he doesn't care about drugs and terrorists and criminals and things like that … the only way Biden is going to do his job is we hold Ukraine aid hostage to a secure border."
Since Joe Biden has taken office there have been almost 8 million illegal entries through the U.S. southern border coupled with billions of dollars in Ukraine funding. On top of the latest bill, the Pentagon gave another $250 billion for "security assistance" in December of 2023.
Scott clarified he wants to help Ukraine, but not for them to be used as a political puppet.
"I am not going to support a bill unless it secures the U.S. border," he said. "I voted to help Ukraine and now I'm in the position I wanted to understand what we're going to do to win. Maybe we should give them lethal aide, but I'm not going to give them Manchurian aid."
