Rep. Riley Moore, R-W.Va., told Newsmax on Monday that the globalists are "having a big sad" over President Donald Trump's tariffs because he is not going to allow other nations to keep taking advantage of the United States.
"Thank God we have somebody back in the White House that is actually doing something for the American people," Moore said on "Newsline." "My state, here in West Virginia, we have had countless, countless fentanyl deaths and we know where this stuff is coming from. It's been coming over the Mexican border. Those chemicals are shipped in from China.
"Nobody's been doing anything about it and within 24 hours, President Trump has now gotten the Mexicans to agree to actually do something on their own border with us. It's astounding when you actually care about the American people, what can be accomplished."
Trump on Saturday declared an economic emergency and signed an order imposing tariffs of 25% on all imports from Mexico and Canada and 10% on imports from China.
Trump paused his planned tariffs on Mexico after a Monday conversation with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum in which she agreed to deploy 10,000 members of her country's national guard to the border to combat drug trafficking.
Canadian officials have said they do not believe their country can avoid Trump's looming tariffs, set to take effect Tuesday, as Mexico did.
"The globalists are having a big sad right now, obviously, because the United States is not going to be taken advantage of anymore," Moore said. "We have a trade deficit with Canada. We have a trade deficit with Mexico. As the president says, we've been subsidizing Canada to the tune of $200 billion, and we've just been getting taken for a ride for a very long time.
"And this is part of the reason that I've introduced my U.S. Trade Reciprocal Act, which would give the president the ability to reciprocate tariffs with any country out there, and also take into account nontariff barriers … it could be regulations that are preventing our companies from being able to enter into those marketplaces.
"We've seen the power of tariffs. And by the way, this isn't new. Tariffs have been around since the founding of this country, OK? And the president needs more authority and more power to be able to level the playing field for our companies here in the U.S."
Moore also pushed back on Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer's comments that suggested Trump's tariffs will lead to surging prices before Sunday's Super Bowl.
"Well, let me just say this first: There's zero percent chance Chuck Schumer watches football," Moore said of the New York Democrat. "Just to be clear. So, that's an impossibility. Look, I don't see this happening, this immediate spike in prices. Obviously, we've already found a deal as it relates to the border and these tariffs that President Trump has threatened on Mexico.
"No. 2, You know what? Why don't you go buy some American beer? And by the way, the Hass avocado was invented in the United States. So, everything is going to be OK. Go down to your local shop, support some American business and root for your team there at the Super Bowl. I know Chuck Schumer probably has no idea how that game actually works, but that's all right."
