Roger Stone told Newsmax on Monday that former President Donald Trump will likely take his time before he picks a vice presidential candidate should he, as expected, win the Republican presidential nomination.
There have been reports that Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., and South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem are on a list of candidates.
"Former President Richard Nixon once told me when looking for a vice presidential running mate, don't look for somebody who can help you, just look for someone who doesn't hurt you," Stone, a former Trump campaign adviser, told "Greg Kelly Reports" and guest host Michael Grimm. "While that may be a little cynical, the goal here has to be to choose someone, first of all, who's fully qualified based on experience, judgment, and temperament to be president if, under the worst scenario, God forbid, something should happen to Trump.
"Secondarily are the political considerations. You need to select somebody who will be popular in the president's base but still allow you to reach out to some group of voters where you could make gains. So, by definition, that could be somebody who is African American, Hispanic. Perhaps a woman. The president has a wealth of choices."
Stone said Trump is a master showman who knows his pick is going to be a big topic that will draw a lot of attention.
"He says he's got a short list, but he's never told me who's on it," Stone said. "He actually at one point said he's already selected someone, but as long as he doesn't announce that, he has the right to change his mind at any time.
"We don't even know who the Democratic candidate for president and vice president is going to be. I suggest to you, the president is going to take his time in making his choice and announcing his choice. He doesn't need to do so until [the Republican National Convention] in July."
