Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., told Newsmax on Monday he is filled with optimism about President-elect Donald Trump's second term.
"This is a very good morning for America," Johnson said. "He's coming into office now with far more experience, certainly wary of how the deep state actors undermined and sabotaged his first administration. I don't think he's going to let that happen again."
Johnson said it's the job of the Senate to confirm his Cabinet picks so they can get to work.
"I'm sure he'll be putting people in an acting position to try and get control over the deep state and start fulfilling those promises he made during the campaign that the American people support," Johnson said.
The Wisconsin senator said Trump will be focused on securing the border.
"Unfortunately, we had four years … where President [Joe] Biden opened it up and created this clear and present danger," Johnson said. "So that will be a primary focus."
Johnson said he expects Trump to focus on making America energy independent, strengthening the country's defense and making sure his tax cuts don't expire.
"The Biden administration has created so many enormous messes," Johnson said. "We've got a lot of work ahead of us. We need to provide President Trump those resources to secure the border, and we have to bring total government spending down to some pre-pandemic baseline."
