Sen. Johnson to Newsmax: Public Needs 'Gory Details' of Biden DOJ Spying

By    |   Saturday, 18 October 2025 11:37 AM EDT

Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., told Newsmax Saturday that he opposes a probe into the Biden administration's targeting of eight GOP senators because Americans need "to know all the gory details regarding this breach of separation of powers."

The Senate Judiciary Committee revealed on Oct. 6 that the FBI under former President Joe Biden monitored the personal cellphones of Johnson and seven other Republican senators for "tolling data" as part of its Arctic Frost investigation.

"I don't want a criminal investigation. At some point in time, that may be appropriate," Johnson said during an appearance on "America Right Now."

"But my experience in investigating for 10 years, the minute you have a special counsel or a criminal investigation, ... the American people get no information. And they may never get the information through criminal investigation.

"They only use that information to get sealed and held from the public, and I don't think that's going to be adequate this time. The American public needs to know all the gory details regarding this breach of separation of powers," he said.

GOP lawmakers are requesting that the Office of Professional Responsibility refer its findings to Tennessee and New York state agencies that review the conduct of attorneys, as former special counsel Jack Smith is licensed to practice law in both states.

"It was an outrageous violation of the separation of powers. We don't know a whole lot yet," Johnson said.

"Jack Smith was appointed in September of that year [2022]. Then about a year later, Jack Smith announces the indictments against Donald Trump.

"Then a couple of months after that, they're scooping up our records. Beyond that, about a month or two later, the deputy attorney general, Lisa Monaco, changed the procedures that would be required for them to snatch up those kind of records," Johnson added.
