Rep. Cloud to Newsmax: McConnell's 'No' Votes on Confirmations 'Concerning'

By    |   Thursday, 13 February 2025 03:03 PM EST

It's "concerning" that Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has voted now against two key nominees, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Tulsi Gabbard, but still, Senate Republicans have the votes to approve the nominees that will deliver what Americans voted for when they chose President Donald Trump, Rep. Michael Cloud, R-Texas, told Newsmax Thursday.

"They did not want the status quo," Cloud said on "Newsline." "You have some senators who are still trying to embrace the status quo — hold on to yesteryear for whatever reason — but it's been highly ineffective."

Meanwhile, Trump's administration will "right the ship" in agencies that went "rogue" under former President Joe Biden, said Cloud.

"It's awesome to see that their focus is going to be serving the American people instead of being a tremendous weight upon them," he added.

Cloud also said he believes Kash Patel will be confirmed as FBI director, "and he will do an awesome job at it."

"He's not only uncovered the massive corruption within our intelligence agencies, but he was also a target of them," said Cloud. "He knows that they're supposed to be serving the American people. Our whole government is supposed to be serving the American people."

However, much of Washington's bureaucracy "thinks that the American people exist to serve them and to keep them afloat and to keep their agencies going, and that's not how this is supposed to work," Cloud said.

The congressman also discussed the upcoming House budget resolution and noted that there remain a number of conservatives who want to see further cuts to federal spending.

"There are two things we have to do to get our economy working again," he said. "We have to grow our economy, but we also have to shrink the government spending. We're headed toward a fiscal cliff, and President Trump's going to do some great things to get the economy going. But we've got to rein in the government spending as well."

House Republicans want more room for Trump to get initiatives done on the tax side, while "we also maintain the other side of that balance sheet and rein in government spending," said Cloud.

"We have to do both," he said. "It can't be one or the other … so I think that's going to pass in committee today, and then we should move throughout the committee today and get our committees working to make sure we get this reconciliation package done."
