Sen. Cruz to Newsmax: Impeach Judge Boasberg

By    |   Wednesday, 29 October 2025 08:15 PM EDT

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, called for the impeachment of U.S. District Judge James Boasberg, accusing him of an "egregious abuse of judicial power" for ordering Cruz's phone carrier not to inform him about a federal subpoena for his personal records.

Cruz told Newsmax on Wednesday the Biden administration's Department of Justice subpoenaed AT&T for his cellphone data as part of the Arctic Frost investigation, but the company refused to comply, citing constitutional protections for members of Congress.

However, the subpoena included a gag order from Judge Boasberg — a directive that barred AT&T from telling the senator that federal agents were seeking his records.

"Judge Boasberg ordered AT&T, 'Do not tell Cruz we are subpoenaing his cellphone records,'" Cruz said on "Rob Schmitt Tonight." "He claimed that if I were informed, I would destroy or tamper with evidence and intimidate witnesses.

"That is utterly without factual basis. It is a complete abuse of judicial power."

Cruz called the judge's action "a blatant partisan overreach" and said it fits into what he described as former President "Joe Biden's Watergate" — a pattern of surveillance and intimidation aimed at political opponents.

"When Judge Boasberg decided to become a partisan warrior, he became part of the most egregious abuse of power," Cruz said. "This is Joe Biden's Watergate, and I believe the House should impeach Judge Boasberg."

The Texas senator also vowed to uncover the full extent of what he called a politically motivated spying campaign on Republican lawmakers.

"We're going to get to the bottom of every partisan who signed off on surveilling and spying on 20% of the Republicans in the Senate," Cruz said. "That's what Joe Biden and his DOJ did."

Cruz's comments follow revelations that the Department of Justice in April 2022 approved a broad investigation that became the so-called "Arctic Frost" probe — a sweeping Biden-era operation that targeted communications of more than 160 GOP officials, lawmakers and Trump administration figures.
