Rep. Burchett to Newsmax: Mayorkas Broke Law Lying Under Oath

By    |   Wednesday, 07 February 2024 02:53 PM EST

Republicans who voted against impeaching Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, basing their argument on claims that he had not broken the law, are wrong, Rep. Tim Burchett said on Newsmax Wednesday.

"He lied under oath, and that is exactly what they got [Richard] Nixon for," the Tennessee Republican told "Newsline." "If you remember, they didn't convict him of crimes."

Mayorkas, said Burchett, "is pathological."

"He has stated time and time again that there is no problem at the border, that these people are not coming over the border," Burchett said. "Just this week, I met with narcotics people that represent the national organization, in my office and they said 100%, the fentanyl [is] coming over [the border]."

All hope of forwarding the impeachment articles against Mayorkas is not lost, however, the congressman said, noting that House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, who missed Tuesday's vote, will "be back from cancer treatment and we'll pass this."

However, Burchett said he has his doubts that the impeachment will be approved in the Democrat-controlled Senate.

"It will never be taken up in the Senate, just like H.R.2," Burchett said, referring to the House bill passed on border reform last year. "What about H.R.2? It's been over there for six months. Why isn't the liberal media saying anything about that?"

Burchett also on Wednesday discussed the Senate compromise bill on border reform and war funding for Ukraine, saying that he does like Sen. James Lankford, R-Okla., the lead Republican on the bill.

However, he blamed the bill's decline on the National Chamber of Commerce, which he claimed has its "tentacles in every immigration bill."

"They like having cheap labor," Burchett said. "You know, the uniparty is what's running this thing when they closed the doors and they cut these deals. This is what happens. You have a nice guy, very intelligent, but I believe they took advantage of him."
