Rep. Tony Gonzales to Newsmax: 'Time For Change' at DHS

Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-Texas, told Newsmax on Monday it's his belief that Homeland Security Director Alejandro Mayorkas will get impeached in a full House floor vote because "it's time for a change at DHS."

Further, Gonzales told "The Record with Greta Van Susteren" that what the Senate does with a potential impeachment is irrelevant; lower chamber lawmakers "need to do what the House is supposed to do."

Gonzales said step one is getting the impeachment resolution out of the House Homeland Security Committee on Tuesday. House Republicans released two articles of impeachment against Mayorkas on Sunday over his failure to secure the U.S.-Mexico border.

"I suspect we will get that out. I will vote for impeachment as will all my Republican colleagues," said Gonzales, himself a member of the panel. "And then we gotta get it to the House floor. We came up a little short in November. … I think when it comes to the floor this next time, we're not going to come up short because it's clear to America that enough is enough, and it's time for a change."

Van Susteren asked the Navy veteran if Mayorkas should get impeached for following the orders of his boss, President Joe Biden.

"I've been of the mindset impeachment was for 'in case of emergency, break glass.' That's the way our Founding Fathers built that. But I think we're at that emergency," Gonzales answered. "And I think back to the time where I've had to have conversations with Americans that were killed."

"But at some point, whether he's impeached or not ... you brought up an earlier point; is the Senate really going to take this up? Is the Senate going to do anything? They may not, but it's sure as well time for the House to do what the House is supposed to do. And what we need to do is have a change at DHS," he added.

"Whether that's impeachment or otherwise, it's very clear: America needs a change on border security policy."
