Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-Texas, said Wednesday on Newsmax that the United States and Mexico should work together to address security challenges at the border instead of assigning blame.
Gonzales, a member of the House Homeland Security Committee, emphasized the need for cooperation between the United States and Mexico in dealing with border security and cartel violence, saying the two countries must work together rather than pointing fingers.
Appearing on "The Record With Greta Van Susteren," Gonzales responded to questions about Mexico’s decision to send 10,000 troops to its border with the United States, a move prompted by pressure from former President Donald Trump’s tariff threats.
"I think, look, it all depends on what is the Mexican army going to do and what are we going to do, you know, and how can we partner up together?" Gonzales said. "That was another one of my discussions, is we have to be partnering together to tackle some of these very difficult problem sets. It’s fun to point fingers. It’s fun to blame each other on whose fault it is. But at the end of the day, Americans are dying. And how do we make that stop?"
Gonzales, whose district includes a significant portion of the U.S.-Mexico border, said residents are desperate for relief.
"Many people in my district, we just want the nightmare to go away," he said. "And I tell you what, in just a short couple of weeks, President Trump has certainly gone all in on fixing a problem. But it’s going to take years in order to get this done. But a big part of that is continuing to have the dialogue and force our partners down south to deliver results."
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has more than 280,000 military troops deployed across Mexico to address public security, including drug trafficking and illegal migration — two key issues for Trump, USA Today reported.
In response to Trump’s threat of a 25% tariff, Sheinbaum offered to send 10,000 troops to the U.S. border, reallocating a fraction of the more than 32,000 Mexican National Guard members already involved in immigration enforcement across the country.
