The Rev. Robert F. McKeon from the Archdiocese of New York, told Newsmax Tuesday that the cardinals of the Catholic Church have a potentially long process ahead to elect a new Pope.
McKeon told "National Report" that part of what is involved for cardinals to choose a successor to the late Pope Francis is that, first, many need to get to know each other.
"A number of the cardinals really don't know each other well because they maybe don't have that connection in Rome or in Europe. It's very international now. And as a result, part of what's going to happen naturally is they're going to talk to each other, get to know each other," said McKeon.
McKeon said there's no doubt that there will be some discussion about the potential political implications of choosing a new Pope. "And that will include what are their thoughts on different issues, including in the political realm, but more importantly, with regard to the church and the future of the church."
McKeon pointed out that politics won't guide the selection process, though — God will guide it. "But most importantly, they're going to get to know each other better. And they're going to pray together to ask the Holy Spirit to guide them on who is the right person to choose."
President Donald Trump announced via Truth Social that he and first lady Melania Trump will be in Rome for the Pope's funeral on Saturday. McKeon said that it's an important thing for all world leaders to consider, in that paying respect to the Pope shows a connection with the Vatican but also shows respect to the Catholics they represent at home.
