Fmr UK PM to Newsmax: Unelected Bureaucrats 'Must Be Taken On'

By    |   Saturday, 14 December 2024 02:15 PM EST

Former U.K. Prime Minister Liz Truss issued a stark warning on Newsmax Saturday about the growing power of unelected bureaucrats, urging public awareness and decisive action to combat their influence in Western governments.

Truss, who served a brief 44-day tenure, appeared on "Saturday Report" to discuss what she sees as a critical threat to democracy: the increasing power of unelected bureaucrats over elected politicians.

"In Britain, we live in a country now where the decisions are not made by elected politicians. They are made by unelected bureaucrats, and this situation has grown over the last 25 to 30 years, and I think it's very important that the public understand that," Truss said while urging other governments to avoid similar pitfalls.

Truss drew parallels to the United States, mentioning President-elect Donald Trump's recent election mandate to overhaul the American political system.

"President Trump [was] elected on a mandate to change the system in America, and I know he will face many of the forces I faced in the U.K. trying to undermine him. We have already seen commentary from the Federal Reserve, from the Congressional Budget Office, and he has experienced that in his first term in 2016," Truss said.

Truss called for widespread recognition of the issue, asserting that many governmental challenges stem not from elected officials but from entrenched, unelected institutions.

"Much of the problems with our government are not down to politicians; they are down to unelected bureaucrats, and they need to be taken on," she said.

When asked what message she had for Americans and Donald Trump in particular, Truss underscored the power and resilience of what she described as ideologically driven forces within institutions.

"My message is never underestimate how much power these people have and how dirty they will play," she cautioned. "It's going to require all the strength of President Trump, his nominees, but also the conservative movement to make this change happen."

"This change is vital for saving the West because, unfortunately, our institutions have been ideologically taken over. They are undermining not just politicians, but they're also undermining our countries, and they need to be taken on," she added.
