Rep. Victoria Spartz, R-Ind., said Wednesday that House Speaker Mike Johnson's continuing resolution to fund the federal government until mid-March is "sausage-making," not "governing."
"I guess there is the difference between sausage-making and governing and leading or making deal with slush funds and try to jam Congress last second before Christmas," Spartz told Newsmax's "Wake Up America." "That's business as usual, and it's unfortunate reality. … I understand we have a reality, but unfortunately we haven't been governing for a while and that is not governing. This is punting the issues and making deals to appease Democrats, not even talking to Republicans."
In an interview earlier on "Wake Up America" on Wednesday, Johnson expressed confidence in his ability to retain the gavel in the new Congress, but Spartz said that his leadership abilities were being questioned by many from within his own party because of the spending package.
"I think a lot of Republicans, even on the moderate side, are now questioning his leadership and questioning really does he have the strength to govern?" she said. "Is he going to be easily ruled? And [are questioning] how he's making deals. So, I think it's probably he should be more concerned.
"Ultimately, we'll have to figure out we need to deliver on the policies next Congress, very important policies for President Trump, because this is our chance to save this republic. I truly believe next year and two reconciliations is the only chance we have, and if we don't show that we can govern and deliver in the code through Congress, great things that President Trump is going to do, that they have actually longer term effect, then we're going to fail and people will be very upset with us."
Spartz has said that she will not site on any committees or participate in the Republican caucus in the 119th Congress because she wants to focus her efforts on aiding the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
"I just want to actually try to figure out how to get it done, and the only way to get attention how broken is this institution it's really to get the American people understand and have some transparency that we are not governing here," she said. "We are not making laws. We are not authorizing spending. We are not trying to deliver policy. We don't have deliberation and debate.
"We have messaging bills, we have talking points, and that's about it. The country is in deep trouble. So, I don't want to be part of circuses. I was elected by people to deliver, and I'm not going to be participating in them. And I think we need to bring more transparency because this institution can only be fixed by the American people now."
