Ret. Gen. Wesley Clark told Newsmax on Tuesday that Ukraine's drone attack against Russia earlier that morning could be a "pretty significant" blow in the ongoing war "from a military logistics standpoint."
Ukraine on Tuesday morning launched a surprise underwater attack against the Kerch Bridge that links Crimea with Russia, which was described as "a logistical artery to supply its troops" by the head of Ukraine's security service.
Clark said on "National Report" that the attack by Ukraine is "potentially significant," noting that it could have come impact on Russia's plans for Crimea.
"There's another way that Russians can get military supplies into Crimea and Russia wants to build up supplies for a major strike in the autumn against Odesa, so Crimea would be a staging ground for that."
Clark said, "So if this strike disabled the bridge ... it may or may not have really taken down a span of the bridge, but if it did, it's pretty significant from a military logistics standpoint."
When asked how Russia will respond to this attack and the drone strikes on Sunday, Clark said that President Vladimir Putin "will obviously tighten up internal security. He will have to do it air base by air base."
He also predicted that "the persons responsible will be sacked, that's the normal way Russia responds to these things, and they will be charged with criminal violations in some way."
Clark said that military leaders will decry, "How did those trucks with those drones, with the explosives, pass through the Russian border? ... How did they get on to the Telegram channel for control? Doesn't Russia monitor that?"
He added: "Putin is going to want to ask all these questions, but he's also going to respond harshly against Ukraine. That's probably in the planning right now. And the normal way he does it is he attacks energy infrastructure and populations. So expect some strikes, more strikes on Kyiv, on Kharkiv, on Dnipro and on Odesa."
