Dr. Yalda Safai to Newsmax: Cognitive Decline Risks Clear When Electing Older President

By    |   Saturday, 10 February 2024 12:35 PM EST

Psychiatrist Dr. Yalda Safai discussed concerns surrounding cognitive decline and President Joe Biden's health during an interview on Newsmax on Saturday.

"The biggest risk factor for dementia is age, with the risk doubling every five years after the age of 65," Safai stated on "America Right Now." "When electing an older president, one must be aware of this risk."

She emphasized memory issues as a primary symptom, including gaps in "semantic memory," "disorientation," and "mood" disturbances such as "irritability and depression." She added that physical symptoms like "walking problems" and "trembling" can also indicate cognitive decline in older individuals.

Stress exacerbates symptoms by diverting resources from cognitive functions, Safai explained. "Chronic stress causes atrophy in parts of the brain responsible for memory and cognitive function," she said.

Regarding President Biden's gait, Safai stressed the importance of sleep for memory health, regardless of age. "If you're not getting eight hours of sleep, you're at risk of developing memory problems," she warned.

On the issue of recall, Safai noted that the "risk of dementia doubles every five years," suggesting that if memory problems were evident in President Biden in 2017, as intimated by special counsel Robert Hur in his recent report, they would likely have worsened over time.

Regarding treatment, Safai highlighted the importance of early intervention with medication to slow or suppress symptoms of dementia.

"The key is to start treatment as soon as signs appear," she emphasized. "Early intervention is always better than treating at late stages."
