Rep. Zach Nunn said on Newsmax's "Wake Up America" on Wednesday that President Donald Trump heads into his upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping with unparalleled momentum and leverage on the global stage.
The Iowa Republican, who sits on the House Agriculture Committee, framed the meeting, scheduled for Thursday in Busan, South Korea, as a critical moment for U.S. trade and national security.
"President Trump is walking in the door coming off just a heater when it comes to international trade, bringing in our allies, hundreds of billions of dollars in export opportunities for everybody from Iowa ag farmers, like in my state, as well as the ability to onshore more here in the United States," he said.
Nunn praised Trump's strategy of strengthening ties with Asian allies while curbing China's regional dominance.
"At the same time, it's boxing China out from trying to be a bully in its own region," Nunn noted, emphasizing that Trump's foreign policy has reestablished America's economic influence across the Indo-Pacific.
According to Nunn, Trump's focus extends beyond diplomacy to tangible trade benefits for U.S. industries, particularly agriculture.
"This is really the trade deal that everybody is looking for to be able to make sure that we ensure our national security, when it comes to rare earth minerals, when it comes to being able to grow our own food here in the United States and have fair market access trade so that corn and soybean and cattlemen – all here in the U.S. – have an export market that works for them," he said.
Nunn highlighted that Trump's record in securing new trade partnerships has been transformative for American farmers.
"Because of the president, now we're able to sell beef to Australia – something we haven't been able to do for years," he said.
"That's helping right here domestically with our cattlemen and we're going to continue to push toward real reform that allows the president to have the ability to go after bad actors like Vietnam that had a 95% tariff against the United States."
He added that Trump's negotiating power has already yielded results with Hanoi.
"With the president's strong pressure, he brought that [tariff rate] down to zero," Nunn said.
"That's free trade, but, most importantly, that's a new market that U.S. ag can get into. It keeps domestic ag successful, cost low for Americans and ultimately, is food security for the entire world led by the United States."
Calling Trump's diplomatic schedule "a huge win," Nunn said the president's engagement with multiple Asian countries in rapid succession demonstrates America's renewed leadership.
"This is a huge win, and it puts the president in a position of strength to negotiate with America's most strategic competitor and the second-largest military in the world," he said. "We want to go in strong; the president's delivering that."
